Global Impact is Seattle Community College District students, faculty and staff, partnering with Seattle-area medical,educational and service-oriented community organizations to deliver healthcare and volunteer service in developing countries.

If you would like to DONATE funds to support Global Impact projects, including medical supplies, please complete this form.

Global Impact volunteers make a real difference in the lives of people in developing countries. In return, the lives of volunteers are enriched by the simple act of serving others — and learning to see the world from a different perspective. This experience is life-changing.

Are you ready to be a Global Impact participant?  Please read our list of goals for participants and for the "clients" we serve in developing countries. There are many challenges and rewards. There are many reasons why people choose to pay to volunteer.

Group Leadership: SCCD faculty and staff and Global Impact Advisory Board members may apply to lead Global Impact trips. The application deadline is November 13, 2009 for Summer 2010 adventures.

HOW TO APPLY

1. These trips will run only after reaching our minimum enrollment. Book your flights as refundable or with cancellation insurance (available with most credit cards) OR wait until you have received confirmation from SCCD Global Impact that the trip is a "go" before you book your ticket.  Approximate airfare: Peru and Vietnam ($1,000-$1,400), Tanzania and India ($1,800-$2,200).
   
   For Tanzania, you should consider flying into Nairobi or Dar Es Salaam and taking a shuttle; for India, flying into Dehli and taking a train to Jaipur.
2. Participants are required to have emergency medical insurance (insurance which will cover you overseas and must include medical evacuation and repatriation of remains). There are many inexpensive policies to choose from. In addition, travel insurance (trip interruption, lost luggage, etc. ) is strongly recommended.
3. Optional college credits are available at each of the 3 colleges. You may contact Mari Acob-Nash - (North), Karen Kato - (Central) or Kathie Kwilinski - (South) — to learn what courses you can register for in coordination with Global Impact programs. A 3-5 credit Experimental Learning course is available to individuals who are not students at the Seattle Community Colleges. Click here for more information on ITL197.
4. Participants may find this Seattle Central on campus course excellent preparation for a Global Impact trip: HEA 225, Global Health, instructor Dr. Jay McClean-Riggs.
5. Limited scholarship funding is available for SCCD students. The deadline for applications to be submitted or postmarked is March 1, 2011.

7. There is a $200 non-refundable application fee in order to reserve your place.
   This fee will be refunded if the SCCD cancels the trip or you are not accepted into the program you applied to join.  It will not be refunded if you do not receive a scholarship — or for any other reason.  Please do not apply if you may not be able to participate.
8. Ready to go?! If you've already decided to sign up, here is a list of language learning resources for Swahili, Vietnamese, Spanish, Quechua, or Hindi.
9. Date for Orientation and Training for all participants will be all day Saturday (9-4pm) on June 25th, 2011. An additional program-specific orientation will be set and communicated to you by your group leader(s) after June 25th and closer to departure.
   Dates will be listed in October for 2011 programs.
