DIRECTIONS TO DISTRICT OFFICE
The Seattle Community College District is the second largest higher education
institution in Washington State, serving more than 54,000 students annually at
Seattle Central, North Seattle, South Seattle and Seattle Vocational Institute
(SVI). The District is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees, appointed
by the Governor for five-year terms.
District Office and District-wide Activities
The Seattle Community College District Office is responsible for leading and
coordinating district-wide functions, activities and services in four areas:
- Chancellor's Office
- Business and Finance
- Human Resources
- Education, Planning and Distance Learning
Office of the Chancellor
Dr. Charles H. Mitchell
The Chancellor's Office serves as a focal point for district-wide policy
and initiatives for the colleges and community. The Chancellor, Dr. Charles
H. Mitchell, represents the district to state and local elected officials, the
State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, civic and business leaders and
the community, and state, regional and local organizations. The three college
presidents, who are responsible for the operation and management of the three
colleges, report to the chancellor.
The Chancellor's Office also includes the Office of Advancement and the
Public Information Office. The Advancement Office coordinates district-wide
fundraising efforts and is currently preparing for a multi-campus fundraising
campaign. The Public Information Office is responsible for district-wide
internal and external communications, including publications, special events,
marketing and media relations.
Office of Business and Finance
Alan Spence, Chief Financial Officer
The Office of Business and Finance is responsible for articulating the
long range financial vision of the colleges and for managing the district-wide
budget development process, distributing state and local funds to the colleges,
and reporting to the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges and to
the District's Board of Trustees. The Business and Finance Office ensures that
the business and finance services for the Seattle Community College District are
in compliance with the laws and policies that govern Washington State's community
colleges. The Business and Finance Office is responsible for Accounting, Budget
Reporting and Analysis, Payroll and Benefits, Purchasing, Information Technology,
Library Technical Services, Mail Receiving and Printing.
Office of Human Resources
Brent Jones, Chief Human Resources Officer
The Office of Human Resources provides support to the district in achieving a
high rate of employee diversity which reflects the district's student body and
community. The Office serves the district through recruitment and employment
services, and supports district human resource information services. It is
responsible for administering employment functions for approximately 2,500
employees, including employment rules and statutes interpretation; salary
adjustments; sabbatical programs; leave and unemployment compensation programs;
and employee records maintenance. Human Resources also coordinates labor negotiations,
and affirmative action activities.
Office of Education, Planning and Distance Learning
Carin Weiss, Vice Chancellor
The Office of Education, Planning & Distance Learning provides leadership,
advocacy and services to enhance teaching and learning and to support district-wide
needs. The office co-ordinates with faculty, administrators and staff throughout
the district to address organizational, curriculum and testing issues, and promote
student success. The office produces data, analyses and publications for federal
and state agencies, the Board of Trustees, the college and community. The office
overseas the Seattle Community Colleges website, and manages the district-wide
Distance Learning program, including new course offerings. Faculty professional
development is fostered through workshops and grants. The office also coordinates
workforce development programs within the District and establishes business and
community partnerships.
