Adult Basic Education / ESL

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

At all of our colleges, Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes are for adults who already know English, but wish to improve their basic reading, writing, and math skills. Reading and writing are integrated to give students the foundation for effective communication. Skills emphasized will help students prepare for the GED or apply to a community or technical college.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are offered to help non-native speakers communicate in English and increase their understanding of American culture. Conversation, pronunciation, reading, writing, and grammar are taught with special emphasis on the skills for survival English and employment-related English. The courses advance to note taking, composition, oral presentation, and class discussion at high levels. NOTE: International Students should take ESL classes listed under International Programs.

Pre-College English, Mathematics and Human Development Classes

Many students entering college or returning after some time away from studies need additional work to prepare for college-level courses. For these students, the Seattle Colleges offer a series of courses in English, mathematics and human development. Placement in one or more of these courses is determined by performance on placement tests required for admission to the specific college program or courses. Courses in this category are those numbered below 100. They are described in the course description sections for English, mathematics and human development.
