About CCN
About CCN

Starting in Summer Quarter 2008, the Seattle Community Colleges will use a new Common Course Numbering (CCN) system. Some of our course numbers and titles have been changed to comply with the new standard being used by the state’s community colleges. The new system is designed to identify courses that are equivalent at community colleges and to make it easier for students who may transfer between two-year colleges.

The CCN list page is designed to show the courses that have been changed to implement the new system. The courses with an ampersand “&” after the prefix code are part of the Common Course Numbering system. However, courses without an “&” will continue to transfer between two-year and four-year colleges under individual Direct Transfer Agreements, as in the past.

Changes may include one or more of the following -

  • Prefix + “&” = courses which are now part of the state’s Common Course Numbering system. Example: AST 100 to ASTR& 100
  • Prefix change to new subject area. Example: ANP 128 to BIOL 128
  • Course number change. Example: ACC 210 to ACCT& 201
  • Course title change. Example: ANT 201 Physical Anthropology to ANTH& 205 Biological Anthropology

Changes are highlighted in red. Bold red indicates a change in prefix designation and/or course number. Some prefix subject areas have only one or two courses with changes.

Updated individual course descriptions are available by performing a course search of the online catalog. Type in the new course prefix and number to get the description. The 2008-2010 catalog will be published in the spring of 2008 and will contain all the new course designations and descriptions.

Click on the links below to go directly to the subject prefix and see the changes:

ACCT ASL CCE DRMA ENGR HIST MATH POLS SPAN
ANP ASTR CHEM ECON FRCH HUM MUSC PSYC VIET
ANTH BIOL CHIN EDUC GEOL JAPN PHIL RUSS
ART BUS CMST
( was CMN)
ENGL GERM JRN PHYS SOC

If a prefix does not appear on the list above, it is not affected by the CCN at this time,
and all those course designations remain the same.

The FAQ page answers questions about the Common Course Numbering system.

For further questions about the CCN contact the district coordinator for CCN, Mark Baumann
